AUCTION OF SCULPTURE IN SUPPORT OF THE PALESTINE CHILDREN'S RELIEF FUND
open until 21st November 2023
I am auctioning the above sculpture, الصخرة (As-sakhra - The Rock), with all proceeds going to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. When the auction is concluded on 21st November, the person who has put in the highest bid will donate the agreed sum directly to the Society and will receive the sculpture as a gift from me.
The sculpture is based on a section of the interior of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, one of the most outstanding artistic achievements in the Middle East and a symbol of National and cultural identity for many Palestinians today. In addition the rock is a metaphor for strength, and is the choice of title for this sculpture in recognition of the resilience of the Palestinian people, and their enduring wish to remain in their homeland in the face of overwhelming hardship.
The near total siege and relentless military bombardment of Gaza has over the past month killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced more than a million people. Forty percent of those killed have been children. The unprecedented humanitarian crisis caused by this compounds severely a decades-long worsening situation both in Gaza and the West Bank, as the effects of occupation and displacement make life more and more intolerable for the Palestinian people.
The Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF) is one of the primary humanitarian aid agencies active in the region. They are currently involved in procuring urgent medical and other aid for the Gaza emergency, and are in the longer term carrying out humanitarian work throughout the Palestinian territories.
